Clean Your Plastic Shower Curtain Liner

I have a plastic shower curtain liner that was really dirty with soap scum and mildew. I had read that you could throw these in the washing machine, but I was hesitant since mine was a heavy-duty liner.

The liner is similar to this one . It's a heavy duty liner.

Well, I should not have been concerned because it really works!

I put the liner in the machine with some white towels, regular detergent, and 1 cup of vinegar. I had read that the vinegar will remove the soap scum, and it sure did! I ran it through a cycle with warm water. When it was done, I hung it back up on the shower curtain rod to dry.

Good as new! Keep the liner looking great with this homemade daily shower spray.

  3. I've heard of this, too! Good to know it works! Right now we have a frosted glass door though...looks nice but man is it a pain to clean!

    1. Use a white vinegar/water mixture to keep your frosted glass doors beautiful! I couldn't believe how easy it was and how gorgeous they looked!

    4. i saw on pinterest a combination of blue dawn & white vinegar ...spray on tub or shower glass, let sit 5 minutes....lightly scrub, and watch the soap scum disappear...I have tried it and it works.

  4. @Anonymous Yes, white vinegar. I still can't believe the difference it made!

  5. Oh, this is a great tip. I definitely am going to try it. Thanks for sharing.

  6. And so much easier to do than scrubbing the glass doors that were in my bathroom. We removed the doors and frame in favor of a curtain. Feels much roomier, too.

  8. That is really interesting...I washed a liner, too, this way, but even without detergent, since I was worried about corrosion with plastic. My liner was pretty much destroyed. I can't remember if I washed on hot, but that might affect it.

    ReplyDelete
  9. You can also soak it with white vinegar and water if you are worried it will fall apart in the washer.

  10. i found the key was washing it with towels. without, it didn't come as clean, and got all mangled and twisted. i suspect the towels help rub off the mildew and scum etc, and keep the load moving along as it should. definately wash it with towels.

  11. Good tip to know!

Those shower curtain liners are such a pain. Why don't they ever clean themselves? ;)

  12. Sparkle your bathtub while you are at it too ... fill with hot warm and pour in white vinegar as the water is running. Let sit, scrub any areas of grime and drain ... sparkles!!

  13. I put mine in the wash with Bleach and Vinegar. The vinegar cuts the soap scum and the bleach cuts any mold and mildew. I have been using the same shower curtain for over 10 years! I guess it pays to buy quality and then to take care of it.

    1. Kira, You should NEVER mix bleach and vinegar because it will cause toxic fumes that could kill you or at the very least cause lung damage.

  14. After washing two or three times, they can start to get tears in them. Just seal up the tears (on the outside) with a square of clear carton sealing tape. Putting it in with a couple of towels helps prevent tears.

  15. I did this for years - I had one liner lasted me probably 5 years before the grommets started ripping! I would throw it in by itself on the hottest water temp with a tiny bit of detergent and bleach. Never thought to do vinegar! It came out clean every time. Now I have glass doors - and I SO miss the ease of just taking down the plastic curtain and tossing it in the wash! LOL

  16. I always used to wash my liners with vinegar and hot water without any problem. We just got a new washer that is top loading HE washer and the liner was not as clean. I will try the towels next time and see if it works. Thanks for the tip.

  17. I just tried this. It works very well! Still had some spots I had to remove myself but its MUCH better than the way I was doing it before! Im SO GLAD I don't have to go out and buy new ones now! Thanks for the tip! :)

  19. After washing the liner in the washing machine, I always hang it on the line to day and it drys (probably from the heat of the sun) without wrinkles and is very soft. Of course, that depends on what season it is (wouldn't work in Wisconsin in January) but during the spring, summer and fall it works great!

  20. Why would you dry your liner?

  21. hello,
I am french and am not sure if I understand well. liner = plastic curtain for the shower ??

    1. Oui, on le met à l'intérieur. À l'exterieur il y a du tissu, puis a l'intérieur il y a un morceau de plastique qui peut être enlevé. C'est ça le "liner"

  22. This works! So happy the liner won't end up in a landfill today. I used cleaning strength vinegar.

  23. What about for front loading machines? Should I put the vinegar inside the drum directly on the linens?

    ReplyDelete
  24. i have been washing my liner with hot water and detergent and always with towels. Never thought about the vinegar but will try it the next time. I also toss it in the dryer for a bit also with towels. Once it gets warmed up it feels like silk! I take it our immediately and hang it back up while it's still flimsy.

  26. My grandmother told me I could wash my liner in the machine and that she does it all the time...I didn't believe her but now I do! I love vinegar for cleaning. Thank for the tip on the vinegar and the towels. :-) I will be doing this today.

  28. Hi, I came across your blog a few weeks ago and have been reading along. I'm loving it! Keep up the good mood.
Recently, a close friend of mine created a website and I would like to share it with you, as I think you would like it too. It's called The Birthday Times (thebirthdaytimes.com), and gives you the newspaper of the day of your birthday. It shows real events and facts of the day you were born. I already knew a few projects like this, but I think this one stands out a little bit from the rest.
    So, here's my tip! :)
    Thanks,
    Regina

  29. After reading a few of the comments, I decided on using the cup vinegar, about half my normal detergent for a normal load and about half a cup of bleach along with my three large towels. Turned out amazing... brand new looking only thought I had was maybe I should of ran it on delicate instead of regular. It was a bit wrinkled but sure the steam from the shower will help with that.

catchier post title? I am not saying your content isn't good, but suppose you added a post title that makes people want more? I mean "Clean Your Plastic Shower Curtain Liner" is kinda boring. You could glance at Yahoo's front page and watch how they write post headlines to grab people to click.

You might add a video or a related pic or two to get readers excited about what
you've written. In my opinion, it might bring your website a little bit more interesting.
